SOLDIERS ALLEGEDLY ASSAULT WISIWISI YOUTH DURING DEMO AGAINST AKROMA GOLD MINING COMPANY

Tensions have risen in the Kwahu West Municipality’s farming hamlet of Wisiwisi following attacks on certain locals by soldiers affiliated with the Akroma Gold Mining Company,
The incident happened Thursday morning when locals, mostly young people, protested the loss of farmlands and waterways, which they said was brought on by illicit mining operations known locally as galamsey.
When more than 20 military personnel stepped in, what had started out as a peaceful protest swiftly descended into chaos. According to reports, a number of locals were physically attacked, and some reporters who were covering the demonstration were also impacted.
The locals charged that Akroma Gold Mining Company was involved in illicit activities that had negatively affected their standard of living.
They are calling for an immediate end to all mining operations in the region.
As of the time of filing this report, calm had yet to be restored in the community.
