SOMALIA CANCELS ALL AGREEMENTS WITH UAE OVER ACCUSATIONS OF UNDERMINING NATIONAL UNITY

Mogadishu cites UAE's alleged support for Somaliland's independence as reason for terminating security, port, and defense pacts.

Somalia has announced the cancellation of all agreements with the United Arab Emirates, accusing the Gulf state of undermining its sovereignty, national unity, and political independence.

The decision follows heightened tensions between the two nations, largely stemming from the UAE’s alleged tacit support for Israel’s recent recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state a move that has drawn sharp international criticism.

Mogadishu specifically cited the UAE’s control of the deep-water port and military base in Berbera, Somaliland, as well as accusations that Abu Dhabi facilitated the unauthorized transit of a Yemeni separatist through Somali airspace and airports.

The Somali government stated that the termination applies to all federal and regional agreements, including bilateral security and defense pacts, as well as cooperation concerning the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo.

Somaliland declared independence in 1991 but remained unrecognized internationally until Israel acknowledged its statehood last month, sparking regional backlash and complicating diplomatic relations across the Horn of Africa.
