SPEAKER MOVES TO PROBE POST-DEC. 7 PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS’ DISMISSAL

Bagbin directs Majority Leader to table motion for parliamentary investigation amid legal dispute

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has directed the Majority Leader to formally schedule a motion calling for a full parliamentary inquiry into the dismissal of public sector workers employed after the December 7, 2024 general elections.

The directive, issued on Tuesday, followed a heated demand from the Minority Caucus, which vowed to invoke all parliamentary procedures to challenge what it described as a politically motivated mass termination of appointments.

The controversy stems from a directive issued by the Chief of Staff on February 11, 2025, instructing the revocation of appointments of all public sector workers recruited after the elections. The order has since sparked public debate and legal challenges from affected employees.

Mr. Bagbin’s instruction to list the motion is expected to pave the way for a formal parliamentary probe into the matter. However, the move is reportedly facing resistance from the Majority Caucus, which has raised a procedural objection.

According to the Majority, deliberating on the issue in Parliament could breach the sub judice rule a parliamentary convention that bars discussion of matters currently before the courts to prevent prejudice or interference with judicial proceedings.

Despite the objection, Minority lawmakers insist that Parliament has both the mandate and responsibility to investigate possible executive overreach in public administration, arguing that the dismissal of affected workers amounts to a violation of due process.

The Speaker is expected to rule on the procedural impasse in the coming days, a decision that could determine whether the House proceeds with a full-scale inquiry or defers to the ongoing court processes.
