SPEAKER SUSPENDS 4 MPS OVER APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE VETTING CHAOS

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has suspended four Members of Parliament (MPs) for two weeks effective immediately following a chaotic incident that occurred during Thursday’s sitting of the Appointments Committee.

The suspended MPs include the two chief Whips for both the Minority and Majority caucuses, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

At the same time, the Speaker has established a Committee to investigate the matter.

The suspension follows an occurrence that the Speaker deemed a shame for the institution of Parliament.

Speaker Bagbin has instructed the Parliamentary Marshal to bar the suspended MPs from accessing the chamber during this time.

The choice was made due to the chaos that arose during the assessment of ministerial candidates, which hindered the seamless operation of the committee’s activities. During the process, tables and microphones were damaged, and a few MPs came close to exchanging blows.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized that such conduct would not be accepted and cautioned about potential consequences if comparable incidents occur in the future.

In his statement, Speaker Bagbin conveyed his dissatisfaction regarding the conduct of the involved MPs.

He stressed that their behavior was inappropriate for Members of Parliament and mentioned that the event had brought discredit to the legislative institution.

He elaborated that the suspension was essential to uphold order and discipline in the parliamentary processes, which he claimed had been significantly compromised by the behavior of the MPs.

Speaker Bagbin mentioned that there could be further repercussions if these disturbances persist.

He reassured the public that Parliament would adopt a strong position against any actions that might jeopardize its reputation and interfere with its functioning.

This follows the Appointments Committee expressing regret for the incident prior to the commencement of today’s vetting.
