The National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo regarding the selection method for the recently awarded National State Awards.
During the 43rd-anniversary commemoration of the 31st December Revolution, Mr. Nketiah raised doubts about the legitimacy of the awards, claiming that certain recipients were unworthy of the honours they were given.
He also pointed out the absence of clear criteria for choosing recipients, which he contended diminishes the honour of the awards.
“State awards are serious business,” Mr Nketiah stated. “They must be reserved for people of distinction, people who have fought for a good cause. If we award state honours to vigilante boys and girls, then we are teaching the youth that it is acceptable to pick up weapons and loot state coffers as ministers.”
He suggested creating laws to govern the bestowing of National and State Awards, promoting transparency, fairness, and a selection process based on merit.
“It is about time we establish a proper committee, backed by law, to determine who should earn a national award,” he added.
The honors, awarded by President Akufo-Addo at the 2024 Ghana National and State Awards event, have generated public anger. Critics, comprising both analysts and regular Ghanaians, have voiced discontent regarding the quality of those recognized.
Among those honored were Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP vice-presidential candidate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Mavis Hawa Koomson, along with numerous others.
