Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a stern warning to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to immediately call his security operatives to order.
Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern over what he described as the weaponization of state institutions for political witch-hunting, following an attempted arrest of Assin South Member of Parliament, Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, by officials from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on Wednesday, April 9.
According to government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the operation turned into a standoff because the MP allegedly refused to cooperate despite the officials possessing a valid arrest warrant. “They have given him time to cooperate, failing which they will act,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.
In a Facebook post on the same evening, Dr. Bawumia condemned the act as politically motivated and described it as a dangerous descent into “lawlessness and fear.”
“Last night, following the attempted raid by some alleged officials of the NIB, I visited Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour. He was in high spirits and undaunted. I urge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution,” he wrote.
He further called on President Mahama to ensure that the security services are not used as political tools.
“I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E John Dramani Mahama, to immediately rein in his security operatives. State institutions must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents. Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear. Our democracy is hinged on due process and rule of law,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized.
Rev. Ntim Fordjour also took to his X (formerly Twitter) page to denounce the incident. He highlighted the contrast between the current situation and the previous administration under President Akufo-Addo.
“In the eight years of President Akufo-Addo’s extraordinary leadership, no opposition MP was harassed by state security for demanding probes as part of their parliamentary oversight duties,” he noted. He thanked former President Akufo-Addo for reaching out personally during the ordeal.
The Assin South MP further praised Dr. Bawumia for showing solidarity by visiting him after the attempted arrest, describing the incident as “a politically motivated lawless act of harassment” aimed at silencing Members of Parliament from exercising legitimate oversight.
“The level of intolerance demonstrated by President Mahama in reaction to the Minority Caucus’ press statement demanding probes into matters of urgent public interest is unprecedented and a major setback in our democratic pursuit,” Rev. Fordjour stated.
He concluded his post with a defiant tone: “This is indeed beyond the culture of silence. Truth will stand always!”
