SUPREME COURT DISMISSES ANAS AREMEYAW ASAS’ DEFAMATION SUIT AGAINST KEN AGYAPONG

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas’s plea to overturn an Accra High Court ruling in the defamation lawsuit against Assin Central Member of Parliament Ken Agyepong was denied by the Supreme Court.

The investigative journalist sued the Assin Central politician in June 2018 for defaming him, and he also requested a GHC25 million judgment.

Nevertheless, the court chaired by Justice Eric Baah dismissed his lawsuit, stating that he was unable to provide sufficient evidence.

“From the above, I hold that the plaintiff [Anas] is a blackmailer who uses blackmail to extort money from his opponents and people he does not like.

“What the plaintiff is doing is not investigative journalism but investigative terrorism,” Justice Baah ruled after awarding a cost of GH¢50,000 against Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Disappointed with the result, the investigative journalist moved the Supreme Court to overturn the High Court’s ruling.

He clarified that by utilizing specific language against the petitioner in the ruling, the presiding Judge went beyond the bounds of his authority.

But ruling on the case on Wednesday morning, the apex court in a 3-2 majority decision dismissed Anas’ motion.
