SAM GEORGE REVEALS MOTHER WAS SCAMMED OF GH¢24,000 BY MOMO FRAUDSTERS USING HIS NAME
Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has recounted a shocking personal experience involving mobile money (MoMo) fraud that hit close to home—his own mother was scammed of GH¢24,000.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Monday, April 15, 2025, the Ningo-Prampram MP disclosed that just days after his ministerial appointment by President John Dramani Mahama, fraudsters called his mother posing as officials seeking to “protect her MoMo account” because of her connection to him.
“In my poor mother’s case, just after I was appointed minister, they called her and said, ‘Oh, because of your son, now we want to protect your Mobile Money and so verify your PIN,'” he recounted.
“They stole her GH¢24,000. And I told her, I said, ‘Ah, but when they called you, why didn’t you call me to confirm?'”
Sam George said the incident was a wake-up call, revealing the alarming extent of MoMo fraud in Ghana. He added that the scam also sparked his renewed resolve to probe potential internal collaboration within telecom and fintech companies that may be enabling fraudsters.
“This is real,” he said. “And so the question again is, are there real instances of connivance by staff of some of these Mobile Money operators?”
He confirmed that his ministry will launch full-scale investigations into the operations of MoMo service providers to examine how they are safeguarding customer funds and whether any staff members may be aiding criminal activity.
“We are going to be asking them to provide us with reports on the measures they are taking to protect their customers,” he emphasized.
