NDC VICE CHAIRMAN AZORKA ARRESTED OVER AKWATIA BY-ELECTION ASSAULT
Top opposition official to face court September 16 after alleged attack on NPP counterpart during recent poll; released on bail pending arraignment.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Alhaji Sofo Azorka, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in connection with an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during the recent Akwatia by-election.
Azorka was arrested in Tamale on Wednesday, September 10, as part of ongoing investigations into the September 2 incident that marred the electoral process. According to a police statement, the NDC official was granted bail after providing a caution statement and has been directed to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, for formal court arraignment.
“The suspect has been cautioned and released on bail to report to the Regional Command on the said date,” the police statement confirmed.
The assault allegation involves two senior officials from Ghana’s main political parties, highlighting ongoing tensions between the NDC and NPP during electoral periods. The Akwatia constituency has historically been a hotspot for political violence during elections.
The police assured the public of a thorough investigation, stating: “We wish to assure the public that thorough investigations will be conducted into the matter. The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in maintaining law and order.”
Authorities have urged all parties and the general public to remain calm as investigations continue, promising to communicate further developments in due course.
