TWO REMANDED FOR ALLEGEDLY TRAFFICKING BULLETS FROM GHANA TO TOGO
The Denu-Torkor Circuit Court in Ghana’s Volta Region has placed two people in custody due to their alleged participation in the illegal transport of ammunition from Aflao to Lomé, Togo.
The individuals under suspicion are Yameglo Kossi and 46-year-old Nyameglo Kossi Attitsogbe, recognised as the main suspect in this matter.
The apprehension occurred after security examinations were carried out along an unauthorised path, referred to as Beat 7, where it is claimed that Attitsogbe was transporting the hidden ammunition with a tricycle driven by the co-defendant.
Officials recovered 29 packs of ammo, including 25 shells of AAA Redstar shotgun rounds. The cartridges were concealed in four bags filled with clothing and other personal items to evade detection.
The arrest was a result of a collaborative effort led by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), working alongside the Ghana Police Service, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Defence Intelligence of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Additional inquiries showed that the primary suspect acquired the ammunition from a certified arms and ammunition dealer located in Accra. The dealer, however, was discovered to have violated regulatory rules, including selling amounts that surpassed legally permitted limits.
The two individuals suspected are anticipated to reappear in court on April 24, 2025, while police persist with their inquiries.
NACSA has reiterated its dedication to collaborating with law enforcement to identify persons and networks involved in the illegal trade and trafficking of weapons and ammunition.
In a statement issued by the Commission, it said: “The interception underscores the critical importance of cross-agency collaboration in addressing the growing threat of illicit arms and ammunition trafficking, and reinforces the need for heightened vigilance across border communities.”
