Tems has written her name into history after being the first female to earn the Best International Act at the 2022 BET Awards thanks to her collaboration with Wizkid on the song “Essence.”
Tems whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, instantly urged other women to strive for greatness while highlighting the fact that her background had nothing to do with her chances of success.
“Where I’m from in Lagos, this is a dream, as you’re watching me, imagine yourself as me, you are meant to be here, too,” Tems said as she held the award.
Her contenders were in the Best International Act category were Dave (U.K.), Dinos (France) Fally Ipupa (the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Fireboy DML (Nigeria), Little Simz (U.K.), Ludmilla (Brazil), Major League Djz (South Africa) and Tayc (France).
