Ghanaian rapper, Michael Owusu Addo, well-known as Sarkodie, has paid tribute to Yaw Sarpong.

Sarpong, a pillar of contemporary gospel music in Ghana, died on January 20, 2026, following a protracted illness.

His songs left a lasting impression on the nation’s music landscape and influenced the genre’s sound as it rose to national popularity.

Following the demise of the veteran gospel musician, Sarkodie, in a post on social media, wrote: “RIP wofa Yaw Sarpong … Thank you for strengthening our faith in the almighty… may he keep you safe.”

With hits like “Oko Yi” and “Wo Haw Ne Sen,” his voice became a familiar presence in churches, homes, and Christian gatherings both in Ghana and abroad.

Religious leaders, public celebrities, and members of the music industry have all paid tribute to him after his passing, and many have said that he laid the groundwork for a new generation of gospel musicians.

In addition to his music, Yaw Sarpong is regarded as a man whose work and life were influenced by his Christian convictions, establishing a cultural and spiritual legacy that will last for many generations.
