Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), has confidently stated that the time of reckoning has arrived for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi.

Sammy Gyamfi’s remarks come after Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah disclosed that he has directed the Minerals Commission to initiate the process of revoking the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd immediately.

The NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman Wontumi, is recognised as the proprietor of Akonta Mining Company Limited, which reportedly has been functioning unlawfully in the Nimri Tano Forest reserve located in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region.

There have been demands for Chairman Wontumi’s prosecution regarding his activities in the forest reserve.

The previous Akufo-Addo administration claimed that the mining firm holds a lease to conduct mining activities in certain areas of Samreboi but asserted that the company lacks mineral rights to perform any mining in the Tano Nimiri forest reserve.

Former President Akufo-Addo has also stepped forward to support the proprietor of Akonta Mining, asserting that Chairman Wontumi is not engaged in galamsey.

Sammy Gyamfi wrote in a post on X, “ The day of reckoning for Chairman Wontumi and his ilk has come. @JDMahama means business. Together with well-meaning Ghanaians, we shall win the fight against illegal mining and preserve our environment”.

The Lands Minister in a press conference stated, “Some interviews conducted with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.

“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (17th April 2025) an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining”.
