Famous Ghanaian musician Mzbel, whose real name is Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, has expressed her disappointment with the FDA’s prohibition on celebrities promoting alcoholic drinks.
In an Onua TV interview, Mzbel raised doubts about the ban’s ability to safeguard the youth.
She says that alcoholic drinks are promoted everywhere and kids are exposed to these ads constantly.
She said that if the ban was meant to protect young people from harmful influences, then it would not be enough.
“The Nigerian celebrities are promoting it, and the youth are seeing these ads on TV and in movies, what is the point of banning us from advertising if the youth will still see these ads,” she quizzed.
Mzbel claimed that the prohibition was actually a strategy by the government to limit the income opportunities of celebrities, who often sign profitable deals with alcohol brands.
“The government is just finding a way to block our source of income, and this is the only way they can do that because most of the celebrities get deals from these companies”, she said.
In June 2024, after a two-year challenge, the Supreme Court upheld the FDA’s guidelines, which were established in 2016, prohibiting well-known personalities from participating in alcohol advertisement campaigns.
