“THE PRIORITY IS TO STABILIZE THE ECONOMY, REDUCE WASTE, AND RATIONALIZE TAXES” – President-elect John Dramani Mahama

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has underscored the need to stabilize the nation’s economy, reduce waste, and rationalize taxes to foster a more competitive environment for business growth. Speaking on the challenges facing the country, Mahama stressed that Ghana is increasingly becoming a high-cost destination for doing business, which could deter foreign investments if left unaddressed.

In his remarks, Mahama pointed to the critical need for transparency in the taxation system, urging that taxes be restructured to create a more attractive climate for international investors. He emphasized the importance of making the country a viable hub for business and industry, which would ultimately create employment opportunities for Ghana’s growing youth population.

“There’s a limit to how much government can employ in a country of more than 30 million people. The number of people on the government’s payroll is less than one million, which highlights that the public sector is not the primary avenue for job creation,” Mahama explained.

He noted that the future of employment in Ghana lies in the private sector, adding that real support for this sector must go beyond mere rhetoric. Mahama called for concrete assistance to the private sector, which he believes is essential for the country’s economic growth and job creation.

The former president also pointed out the vast potential of agriculture, agribusiness, and agro-processing industries as areas that can employ many more Ghanaians. He emphasized the importance of expanding these sectors to improve livelihoods and address the country’s employment challenges.

In closing, Mahama acknowledged the weight of the responsibilities facing the nation and the leadership, expressing his belief that with divine strength, the challenges could be overcome. “God never gives you a load that your neck cannot carry. Once He has given me this load, it is my hope that He will strengthen my neck so that I can carry it,” he said.

Mahama’s comments reflect his ongoing commitment to the sustainable growth of Ghana’s economy and his call for focused efforts to drive economic recovery and job creation in the country.
