THE STATE HASN’T GIVEN ME ANY MONEY FOR ANYTHING, I PAY ALL MY BILLS INCLUDING MY RENT, FUEL FOR MY CARS AND MY MEDICAL BILLS – John Mahama

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has responded to recent debates over ex-gratia payments, making it clear that he has not obtained any of these benefits from the government.

In a recent interview, John Mahama highlighted that the only sum he got was GH¢200,000 or more in salary arrears in 2013.

Mahama has previously stated his plan to eliminate ex-gratia payments for those in the executive branch if he is re-elected.

“The state hasn’t given me any money for anything. I pay all my bills. I fuel my car, I pay my domestic staff, I pay for my medical bills. Whenever I travel with my wife, I pay for my own plane tickets. I haven’t received any ex-gratia from the government.” He disclosed.

This explanation arises during ongoing discussions regarding the compensation of Article 71 officeholders, comprising the President, Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, and other senior officials.

Mahama has indicated in the past that he plans to eliminate ex-gratia payments for those in the executive branch if he is re-elected.

In March 2023, he stated, “The payment of ex-gratia to members of the executive will be scrapped. The necessary constitutional steps to take this will start in earnest in 2025.”
