Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has shared the difficulties he encountered while leading the Black Stars, claiming that some people worked against his authority.
While speaking in an Instagram Live session, Gyan disclosed how rifts within the national team influenced his time there and marred his legacy.
“In my time as a captain in the national team, I was alone. I only delivered on the field,” Gyan said.
“The kids would come into the team, they are all excited to see me. Then three days later, they would be avoiding me all because they have been brainwashed.”
The ex-striker indicated that some individuals in the group fostered division, leading younger players to show him disrespect.
“People brainwashed the kids against me so they didn’t respect me. After my departure, you can see the effect. Go back and look at the kids who were brainwashed” Where are they now?”
Andre is a good person, he genuinely cared for me but he has been brainwashed because it benefits certain people. That is what brought the so-called rivalry. I am not in competition with anyone”. he said.
Gyan also spoke about the criticism related to his captaincy, especially regarding his choice to feature his image on the captain’s armband.
“Instead of celebrating my 50th goal, you were fixated on my face on the captain’s armband,” he lamented.
His remarks emphasize ongoing problems of division within the Black Stars, where supposed internal factions have historically caused friction.
