TMA LAUNCHES CITYWIDE DEMOLITION TO CLEAR ILLEGAL STRUCTURES ON STATE LANDS

The Tema Municipal Assembly begins removing unauthorized buildings near government installations as part of a broader initiative to protect state lands and declare them security zones.

The Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) has initiated a citywide demolition exercise to remove unauthorized structures located on or near government installations, including offices, schools, and hospitals, in a bid to reclaim state lands and enhance security.

The operation, which follows a moratorium on new temporary development permits issued in July 2025, aims to address the rapid proliferation of illegal constructions across the metropolis. Metropolitan Chief Executive Ebi Bright explained to Citi News that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader policy to protect state assets by designating these areas as security zones.

“The exercise will cover the entire metropolis,” the Assembly confirmed, though the move has generated mixed reactions from residents. While some have welcomed the decision as necessary for urban planning and security, others expressed frustration over what they claim was insufficient notice to relocate.

Abraham Nii Adjei Tawiah, President of the Tema Youth Association, pledged the group’s support for the initiative, stating that the association would deploy community watch teams to assist the Assembly in ensuring the successful implementation of the demolition campaign.

The exercise underscores ongoing efforts by municipal authorities to enforce zoning regulations and reclaim public lands amid rapid urban expansion.
