TRANSPORT FARES TO DROP BY 15% STARTING MAY 24, 2025

Starting Saturday, May 24, 2025, transport fares will drop by 15% due to successful discussions between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport.

The fare change accounts for recent macroeconomic trends, such as a consistent rise in the value of the Ghana cedi compared to the US dollar, leading to a significant decrease in fuel costs.

This progress also aligns with an instruction from the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association encouraging its members to lower auto parts prices due to the strengthened exchange rate.

Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), verified the fare decrease during a conversation with Citi News.

He characterised it as an apt action to synchronise with current market trends and alleviate the financial strain on travellers.

Travellers should anticipate advantages from this decrease as the industry adapts to evolving economic circumstances.

“We have finally agreed to reduce lorry fares by 15%, but it will take effect from Saturday. Although currently, spare parts sellers have promised to reduce some of their prices, which hasn’t taken effect yet, and none of the lubricants which previously increased have been reduced, we have decided to peg the fare reduction at 15%,” Imoro explained.
