TW£RKING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BORBORBOR – Efadzinam Borborbor Band
As discussions regarding Ghana’s traditional dances progress, the Efadzinam Borborbor Band is clarifying the facts.
Lizabeth Akusika Bada, the band’s Public Relations Officer, has tackled and refuted the rising belief that links Borborbor to twerking.
During the EVIBES Musical Band Series with Becky, Lizabeth fervently emphasised the importance of honouring and safeguarding the true essence of Ghana’s cultural heritage.
She explained that although Borborbor includes waist movements, it is based on tradition, ceremony, and community celebration, not sensual or provocative dance forms.
“Twerking has nothing to do with Borborbor. Twerking is on its own, but Borborbor has nothing to do with twerking because growing up, we had games which involved using your waist. Borborbor is not the only dance that uses the waist. We have Kpanlogo, which is more or less a seduction dance. So Borborbor has nothing to do with twerking or sexual dancing. It’s just culture that was left for us, and we are preserving it.”
Her remarks emphasise the importance of honouring the authenticity of traditional dances such as Borborbor, which is fundamentally linked to the culture of the Ewe community in Ghana’s Volta Region.
Recognised for its lively drum beats and fluid hip motions, Borborbor represents unity, festivity, and identity, not sensuality.
