During a recent graduation ceremony at the Academic City University College, John Mahama expressed his worry about the rising levels of youth unemployment in Ghana.
The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), believes that unemployment in the country has reached a historic high under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
Mahama emphasized that youth unemployment is a significant threat to Ghana’s stability and security, and there are no immediate job opportunities available for graduates.
He warned that it could take years to secure decent employment. Currently, Ghana’s unemployment rate stands at an estimated 13%, which is the highest in the country’s history.
The closure of local banks and the banking sector cleanout have resulted in the loss of numerous jobs, leading to a crisis in the economy.
Mahama highlighted that the current state of Ghana’s democracy is under threat, with people’s confidence and trust in leadership at an all-time low.
Speaking on the government of Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, he said it has led to massive haircuts, eroding the capital of Ghanaian entrepreneurs, the income of middle-class families, and pensioners’ savings.
