VICTORIA HAMAH URGES PRESIDENT MAHAMA TO REPRIMAND, NOT SACK SAMMY GYAMFI OVER AGRADAA DOLLAR GIFT
Ex-Deputy Minister cautions against alienating youth leadership over controversial incident involving Ghana Gold Board CEO.
Former Deputy Minister for Communications, Victoria Lakshmi Hamah, has issued a passionate appeal to former President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to formally reprimand but not dismiss Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, following public backlash over a cash gift he presented to evangelist Nana Agradaa.
In a statement titled “Youth in Power: Embracing Imperfection for a Progressive Democratic Future,” Hamah emphasized the importance of preserving youth leadership and mentorship within the NDC’s broader vision under Mahama’s guidance.
“I respectfully submit that a formal reprimand, rather than exclusion from office, represents the most constitutionally sound and developmentally judicious response,” she wrote.
The controversy erupted after a video circulated showing Gyamfi giving U.S. dollars to Nana Agradaa, raising concerns over political optics and ethics. Some critics have called for his dismissal, citing a breach of the party’s code of conduct.
However, Hamah warned that a harsh response could disillusion a generation of politically engaged youth and weaken the momentum around empowering young leaders within the party.
“To support young leaders only in moments of triumph, and abandon them at the first signs of fallibility, is to reinforce a brittle political culture that discourages innovation and suppresses bold leadership,” she stated.
Hamah, who herself was sacked from office in 2013 under Mahama’s first administration following a leaked audio scandal, urged the party to treat the incident as a learning opportunity.
“Let this moment serve not as a rupture, but as a reckoning with the kind of political maturity that welcomes imperfection as part of the journey toward excellence,” she concluded.
