VIRAL POST ALLEGES RUSSIAN NATIONAL HAS HIV

Social media claim sparks fear online as health experts warn against spreading unverified information.

A viral social media post circulating on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked widespread concern in Ghana after alleging that a Russian national who recently trended online is living with HIV and has stopped taking medication.

The post, shared by a popular commentary account, claimed the man had been “exposed” by a supposed partner abroad and warned Ghanaians to be cautious. The message has since garnered hundreds of thousands of views and triggered heated discussions across multiple platforms.

However, as of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation from health authorities, law enforcement agencies, or any credible source to substantiate the claims.

No Verified Evidence

The allegations, which include claims about the individual’s health status and intentions, remain unverified. Health information is highly sensitive and private, and experts caution that sharing unconfirmed medical claims about any individual can amount to defamation and misinformation.

Public health professionals also stress that HIV-related stigma remains a serious issue, and spreading unverified claims can fuel discrimination and panic.

Health Experts Urge Caution

Medical experts note that HIV is a manageable condition with proper treatment, and individuals on antiretroviral therapy who adhere to their medication can live long, healthy lives. They also emphasise that responsible reporting and fact-checking are crucial when dealing with sensitive health matters.

The Ghana Health Service and the Ghana AIDS Commission have not issued any statements regarding the viral claims.

Warning Against Misinformation

Digital safety advocates are urging social media users to avoid sharing unverified allegations, particularly those involving serious health conditions. False or misleading posts can damage reputations, create unnecessary fear, and contribute to harmful stereotypes.

While the individual at the centre of the viral post has previously been trending online for unrelated reasons, there is currently no confirmed evidence supporting the health-related claims being circulated.

Authorities are yet to comment on whether any investigation will be conducted regarding the source of the allegations.

In the meantime, the public is being advised to rely on verified information from credible institutions and to exercise caution when engaging with viral content online.
