Actor and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has emphasized that leading the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture requires more than just creativity—it demands vision and a commitment to the welfare of the industry.
Dumelo’s remarks come in response to calls for appointing a creative arts practitioner to head the ministry in President John Mahama’s new administration. Speaking to Graphic Showbiz, Dumelo explained, “Being a Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture goes beyond being a creative. What is more important is to be visionary and seek the welfare of the players you represent. The focus should be on someone who understands the policies and can champion the goals of the sector.”
The ministry, first established by Mahama in 2013, merged tourism, arts, and culture under one umbrella, addressing the creative industry’s long-standing calls for greater representation. Previously, arts had been left out of government portfolios, with culture tied to the chieftaincy ministry.
Despite the argument for appointing creatives, Dumelo believes leadership should prioritize competence and strategy over industry affiliation. Past appointments, such as Abla Dzifa Gomashie and Mark Okraku Mantey as deputy ministers, have shown potential but left many in the sector advocating for a full ministerial role for a creative insider.
As names like Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Baba Sadiq, and Rex Omar circulate as potential candidates, stakeholders eagerly await President Mahama’s decision on who will lead this vital ministry.
