WE CAN’T PAY COMPENSATION TO CUSTOMERS – ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has averred that it cannot pay any form of compensation to affected customers who were unable to buy electricity credits due to technical faults.

A few days ago, the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) ordered the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to compensate all affected customers for system failure.

In a letter dated October 4, 2022, the PURC ordered that the Electricity Company compensate such persons in compliance with the laws; of Sections 11 and 12 (1) of the Public utility act of 1997 and Regulations 41 and 45 of the Public Regulatory commission of the country.

The statement was signed by Ishmael Ackah who is the executive secretary of the commission, instructing compensation to all affected customers.

ECG was to pay a compensation of GHc15 in credit equivalent to GHc120 to all residential affected customers and GHc240 to non-residential customers.

However, the managing director of the ECG, Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama said the company has no issue with the directive from PRURC but will only compensate customers if they provide evidence of their challenges.

Speaking in a brief with the media, Mr. Mahma insisted that they cannot compensate everyone.

“What we are also seeing is that just by one person saying something, there were panic buys”.
