McDan Aviation has dismissed claims by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) that it owes $3 million in accumulated charges, leading to the closure of Terminal 1 at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on December 30, 2024.
In a statement issued on Monday, McDan Aviation’s CEO, Kwaku Ampronfi, clarified that the reported $3 million debt is incorrect.
He emphasized that the company has made significant payments and is actively working with the GACL to address the issue. “We do not owe $3 million as has been erroneously reported,” the statement read. “We made a payment last week and will resume further payments in January 2025.”
The shutdown of Terminal 1 is not the first instance that McDan Aviation has encountered such measures. In February 2022, the GACL likewise closed the terminal due to operational violations.
Furthermore, the company tackled a different matter regarding a piece of land obtained from the GACL, noting that payments for this land are postponed because of a current court case linked to third-party litigation.
McDan emphasized that this land conflict has no connection to its Terminal 1 activities.
Terminal 1, which was initially designated for domestic flights, was assigned to McDan Aviation in 2021 for Fixed Base Operator (FBO) services following the opening of Terminal 3 that moved international operations.
McDan Aviation called GACL’s choice to shut down Terminal 1 “unfortunate,” insisting that talks regarding financial responsibilities are still happening and that the closure was not needed.
“We remain committed to resolving this issue through constructive dialogue,” the company stated.
The incident has raised questions about McDan Aviation’s financial management and compliance with regulatory requirements. However, the company remains optimistic about resolving the matter and resuming private jet services at Terminal 1.
