The Ghana Movie Awards founder, Mr. Fred Nuamah, has finally addressed the considerable criticism that arose after the choice to give winners a locally crafted fan, commonly referred to as ‘papa,’ as an award at the event held recently.
During an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s ‘Showbiz A-Z’ program, Mr. Nuamah addressed the controversy, stating that two distinct awards ceremonies took place on the same evening at the same location, the Ghana Movie Awards and the Ghana TV Series Awards.
He stated that those who received the ‘papa’ plaques were the winners of the Ghana TV Series Awards, rather than the esteemed Ghana Movie Awards, renowned for its iconic golden plaques.
He mentioned that the choice to present the ‘papa’ plaques to the winners of the Ghana TV series awards was made because the organizers aimed for something local that emphasized our culture.
“The Ghana TV Series Awards intentionally adopted a more local and culturally significant theme, which is why the ‘papa’ was used as the award plaque,” he explained.
Mr. Fred Nuamah, however, promptly noted that due to the backlash they’ve encountered, the team has chosen to reevaluate the selection of the award design to prevent any future misunderstandings.
