“WE WILL BEAT ANYONE CAUGHT SELLING ON THE PAVEMENT“ — Kumasi Mayor Warns Traders

The Mayor of Kumasi, Mr. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has given a strict two-week notice to vendors using the sidewalks and roadsides in the central business area.

He warned that those who do not leave by the deadline will face penalties, including the possibility of being beaten.

On Monday, April 14, the Mayor spoke at a news conference in Kumasi.

He stated that starting on Wednesday, April 16, 2024, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will begin efforts to remove vendors from walkways and roadside areas.

“I have my own military-democratic style which I will be implementing. When we say leave the space, and you don’t leave the space and I get there, and you’re not there and my boys are with me, there and there we will beat you,” he warned.

The new Mayor took office earlier this year and introduced a different approach for enforcing rules. He referred to it as a “military-democratic style.”

This term surprised some people, but Mr. Boadi clarified it means blending law enforcement with strong, forceful measures to make sure everyone follows the rules.

“In the middle of Adum, if I’m alone, you will be lucky, but if I’m with my ten boys, in their pick-up with their whips, trust me, we will beat you. If you don’t want to experience that kind of situation, do what is right and lawful,” he added.

This announcement has led to different reactions among city residents.

Some people support the plan, as they believe it will restore order and improve safety for pedestrians. However, others are worried about the threat of violence and the potential for human rights abuses.
