WHAT’S WRONG WITH LISTENING TO BURNA BOY, BLACK SHERIF AND OTHERS? – Sonnie Badu Asks Critics

Head Pastor of Rockhill Chapel cum gospel musician, Sonnie Badu, claims he typically listens to secular music by artists like Burna Boy, Davido, and Black Sherif.

The well-known man of God made this comment after earlier posting a screenshot of his “Spotify Wrapped” playlist, which is an annual compilation of the songs that users have listened to the most on Spotify.

According to the snapshot, Sonnie Badu enjoyed listening to music by Black Sherif, Burna Boy, Sarkodie, and Davido.

Social media users were intrigued by the message and wondered why a preacher and gospel musician would listen to such music.

But Sonnie Badu clarified that the screenshot he posted was not from his account during the most recent episode of United Showbiz, which MzGee presented on UTV.

He said that he had taken the picture from another X post, mistaking it for a universal collection of well-known music that wasn’t associated with any one account. He went on to say that as soon as he realized his error, he instantly apologized.

“It was an innocent error I made. I saw that someone had posted a playlist on X and I thought it was a general list of artistes who were popular on the app. Barely 24 hours later, I saw the backlash. So, I quickly had to come out and apologize,” he explained.

Sonnie Badu countered that there is nothing wrong with his listening to these artists, stating that he listens to secular African music to stay current with musical trends and to learn from their skill.

He mentioned several African musicians, including Burna Boy, Black Sherif, Angelique Kidjo, and Richard Bona, and said he wanted to use the African tones found in these songs in his own work.

“Even if it’s my playlist, what’s wrong with listening to Burna Boy? At home, my children listen to them. Davido sold out the State Farm in Atlanta; I want to achieve that, and I am inspired by them.

“I can’t say I don’t listen to them. My friend’s children play and I enjoy them too, I like to listen to them and I want to see what I can adapt to my music. I need that African sound. I like to listen to all of them to see how I can always get better with my music,” he said.
