WHY DO POLITICIANS REFER TO US AS ‘ORDINARY GHANAIANS’? – Ras Kuuku Asks

Reggae/Dancehall musician Ras Kuuku has voiced his frustration with the way some politicians refer to citizens as “ordinary Ghanaians.”

In a live studio discussion on Onua TV with Captain Smart, he questioned, “Why is it that whenever politicians are talking, they tend to refer to us as ‘ordinary Ghanaians’? If we are filling out a document like a passport, is there a place to indicate if you’re an ordinary Ghanaian?”

He also asked why regular Ghanaian citizens have to wait in line for hours to vote for leaders who do not see themselves as part of the same group.

He proposed getting rid of official documents such as passports, which can create such perceptions, in favor of a single document.

“If it is about someone having a diplomatic passport and another person having an ordinary passport, why not scrap that and let everybody own just one?” he quizzed.

Rapper Flowking Stone, who was also present in the program, shared his thoughts on the matter.

He drew parallels between the conditions in Ghana and those in Europe, specifically the UK.

“Look at the British prime minister; he rides a bicycle and takes trains like normal citizens. I haven’t seen any top-notch European politicians move around in convoys. They move around like ordinary citizens,” he remarked.

He cited the classism which is rife in Ghana, where politicians enjoy a sense of superiority.

“That classism is not there like in Ghana where the politicians like to feel big and they enjoy seeing people cower before them and beg for small monies.

“The tax system there is designed in a way that if you have too many luxurious items, you would feel pressured to dispose of them.

“Because of that, even cleaners and artisans like plumbers and carpenters can earn enough to live luxuriously,” he said.
