WONTUMI BEGINS HUNGER STRIKE, REFUSES FOOD UNTIL RELEASED – Minority Chief Whip

Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh reveals that NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has started a hunger strike to demand his release from detention.

Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip in Ghana’s Parliament, has disclosed that Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Wontumi, has initiated a hunger strike, refusing to eat until he is freed from custody.

Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. His arrest followed a prolonged investigation into allegations of illegal mining activities and unauthorized entry into forest reserves. He had earlier turned himself in to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning before being taken into EOCO custody.

The hunger strike is seen as a protest against his detention and the ongoing legal processes. Hon. Annoh-Dompreh has expressed concern over Wontumi’s health amid the strike and called for a swift resolution to prevent further deterioration.

Who is Wontumi?

Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known by his nickname Wontumi, is a prominent Ghanaian politician and businessman. He currently serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), one of Ghana’s major political parties.
