WONTUMI’S LAWYER REACTS TO AG’S MOVE TO DROP CHARGES AGAINST 4TH ACCUSED PERSON
Andy Appiah-Kubi Acknowledges AG's Prerogative, Warns Witnesses Must Come with "Integrity"

Andy Appiah-Kubi, the lawyer for New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has responded to the Attorney General’s decision to drop charges against the fourth accused in his client’s mining case, stating that the AG is legally empowered to make such a move.
The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, filed an application at the High Court on Monday, November 3, 2025, to withdraw all charges against Edward Akuoko, the General Manager of Wontumi’s Akonta Mining company. This decision came after Mr. Akuoko offered to testify as a state witness against his former boss.
Reacting to the development, Lawyer Appiah-Kubi acknowledged the legal authority of the Attorney General. “The AG is clothed with the legal authority to secure witnesses for the prosecution of persons alleged to have committed acts of crime or corruption,” he stated. “So if, in his good conscience, he feels it’s proper and just to use one of the accused persons against another accused person, he is the Minister for Justice, and it lies within his bosom to decide who to use in this prosecution.”
Despite this strategic move by the prosecution, Appiah-Kubi expressed strong confidence that it would not weaken his client’s defense. He issued a caution, implying that the credibility of the new prosecution witness would be closely scrutinized.
“We are very confident that we will receive justice from the court,” the lawyer said. “Therefore, whoever comes forward as a witness does so with the level of integrity expected of a prosecution witness. And, therefore, I forewarn that anyone who comes into the witness box must come in with the expected level of integrity. So, your personal integrity is equally an issue as the evidence that you proffer in court.”
The lawyer made these remarks on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, while leading his client to court for the continuation of the trial. The case has been adjourned to November 12 and December 4 for the two separate sets of mining-related charges against Chairman Wontumi.
