WORLD BANK PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR GHANA’S YOUTH EMPLOYMENT DRIVE, TARGETS 500,000 JOBS ANNUALLY
The World Bank has announced a strategic partnership to help create 500,000 jobs annually for the country’s youth, addressing one of the nation’s most pressing challenges.
The commitment came during high-level talks between World Bank Managing Director of Operations Anna Bjerde and Ghana’s Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson at the Bank’s headquarters. The discussions centered on a comprehensive Growth and Jobs Strategy designed to spur employment, enhance skills development, and promote inclusive economic growth.
Ms. Bjerde emphasized the Bank’s commitment to Ghana’s development priorities:
“This initiative reflects our shared goal of unlocking opportunities for young people. We are proud to collaborate on a strategy that will not only create jobs but also build a stronger, more resilient economy.”
Dr. Forson welcomed the partnership, highlighting the urgency of innovative solutions to tackle unemployment:
“This is a major leap in our mission to provide decent and sustainable jobs for Ghanaian youth. Bold, targeted interventions are critical to absorbing the growing number of job seekers entering the market each year.”
With over 250,000 young Ghanaians entering the job market yearly and unemployment rates remaining high, this World Bank-backed initiative could mark a turning point in the country’s employment landscape. The success of the program will depend on effective implementation and strong partnerships between government, private sector, and development partners.
The Finance Ministry indicated that technical teams from both sides will work over the coming weeks to finalize the strategy’s framework and implementation roadmap.
