“YOUNG WOMEN, MEN DISAPPEAR, CHILDREN VANISH ON THEIR WAY TO SCHOOL” – Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei Raises Alarm Over Rising Insecurity

The Minority in Parliament has issued a stark warning over what it describes as a sharp and frightening rise in kidnappings across Ghana, declaring that insecurity has escalated into a national emergency.

At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, January 8, the caucus highlighted that young women and men are disappearing while children are vanishing on their way to school, signaling a breakdown in public safety that demands urgent national intervention.

“Kidnapping has risen sharply. Young women and men disappear. Children vanish on their way to school,” the Minority stated, arguing that the government’s response has been dangerously inadequate and overly reliant on committees rather than actionable strategies.

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei cited alarming statistics acknowledged by the Interior Ministry, noting that by July 2025, Ghana had recorded approximately 628 armed robbery cases and 340 murders involving illicit firearms within just six months.

The Minority also raised serious concerns about border security, warning that illegal arms are flowing freely across frontiers while criminal gangs operate with increasing impunity, strengthening kidnapping and organized crime networks nationwide.

“When citizens cannot travel safely on our highways, when parents fear their children will not return home… this is not merely a security failure. It is a governance crisis,” the group emphasized, calling for a comprehensive national security strategy, visible results, and sustained leadership to restore public confidence.
