ZOOMLION NIGERIA INKS £40 MILLION WASTE MANAGEMENT DEAL WITH GERMAN PARTNERS

Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), has sealed a landmark agreement with Germany-based FIMA Industries GmbH and Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH to enhance waste management services in Nigeria. This strategic export deal is backed by £40 million in funding, facilitated by Euler Hermes, the German export credit agency, and Oddo BHF Bank.

The partnership, announced on October 7, 2024, in Lagos, aims to leverage Zoomlion’s extensive waste management expertise alongside FIMA’s advanced technology to establish three state-of-the-art waste treatment plants in Nigeria. These facilities are expected to play a key role in addressing environmental challenges while promoting sustainable waste management solutions.

Mr. Haidar Said, Executive Director of Environment and Sanitation at Zoomlion Nigeria, highlighted the significance of this collaboration. “Following our success story in Ghana, and with support from the German and Lagos governments, we are thrilled to bring this initiative to Nigeria. This contract, valued at approximately 40 million Euros, will fund the establishment of three cutting-edge waste treatment facilities, contributing significantly to reducing carbon emissions.”

He further revealed that the project aims to cut 1.5 emissions annually. Over the next 12 to 24 months, the Jospong Group will invest around $200 million in Lagos State to bolster waste management infrastructure and services. “We hope this project will greatly contribute to protecting the environment and improving public health,” Mr. Said added.

Markus Maierhofer, CEO of FIMA Industries, emphasized the transformative nature of the partnership, stating that it will facilitate the installation of free waste treatment systems across Lagos, helping to recycle compost and significantly reduce waste in the state. “This is a complete game-changer for Lagos. It will help in cleaning up the environment and enhancing public health,” Maierhofer said. He added that FIMA is ready to invest an additional 10 million Euros in technology to support the waste treatment process.

Lucas Doerr, Head of Business Development Export at FAUN Umwelttechnik GmbH, elaborated on the waste management process under the new deal. He explained that waste will be collected and transported to transfer stations, where it will be sorted and recycled at solid waste recycling plants before being sent to engineered landfills for final disposal.

Doerr expressed optimism about the project’s future, thanking the Lagos State Government and the Commissioner of Environment for their crucial support. “This is just the beginning. We look forward to many more accomplishments in waste management and environmental sustainability,” he said.

This deal positions Zoomlion Nigeria Limited as a major player in Africa’s waste management sector, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development through innovative environmental solutions.
