A total of 155 individuals from Ghana’s 16 regions have filed nominations to contest in the upcoming Council of State elections scheduled for Tuesday, February 11. According to data compiled by the Daily Graphic, the list comprises 145 male and 10 female candidates, all vying for the single slot allocated to each region.
The Council of State, an advisory body to the President, is elected through an Electoral College system rather than public voting. The Electoral College is composed of two representatives nominated by each District Assembly across the country.
In the Greater Accra Region, 13 candidates have submitted their nominations, including prominent figures such as former Kpone-Katamanso MP Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, businessman and traditional ruler Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, and other notable personalities like Summertime Kwabillna Ampong, Redeemer Worwui, and Herbert Nii Aryee Annan. Gladys Pinkrah, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), confirmed the list to the Daily Graphic.
Meanwhile, in the middle belt regions of Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo, 29 candidates—27 males and 2 females—have filed their nominations, as reported by Biiya Mukusah Ali from Sunyani.
The Council of State elections are a critical step in shaping the body that provides counsel to the President on national issues. With a diverse pool of candidates across the regions, the upcoming election highlights the growing interest in governance and advisory roles within the country.
As the February 11 election date approaches, all eyes will be on the Electoral College to determine who will secure the coveted slots and contribute to the nation’s decision-making processes.
