2024 ELECTIONS: WHY DECLARATIONS FOR TEMA CENTRAL, OKAIKWEI CENTRAL, ABLEKUMA NORTH CANNOT STAND – Jean Mensa

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), Jean Mensa, has provided a rationale for the commission’s decision to annul the declaration of parliamentary election results for three constituencies in the Greater Accra Region. During a press briefing held at the EC headquarters in Accra, Jean Mensa stated that the returning officers responsible for announcing the results in these constituencies—namely Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North—were compelled to do so without adhering to the mandated procedures.

She further noted that in each of these constituencies, the declared winners were announced without the inclusion of results from a substantial number of polling stations. For example, in the Okaikwei Central Constituency, the EC Chairperson highlighted that the winner was declared without the results from 41 polling stations, while in the Ablekuma North Constituency, the declaration was made without the results from 62 polling stations.

“In Okaikwei Central, I did mention that 110 polling station results were used to declare a winner instead of 141. The commission would not uphold that process.

“In the Ablekuma North constituency, 219 polling station results were used to declare a winner instead of 281 polling station results. The commission would not uphold that declaration. In Tema Central, the DO again was threatened and he was forced to declare results using 146 polling stations instead of 148. The commission would not uphold that declaration,” Jean Mensa said.

It was reported that in the six remaining constituencies, including Ahafo Ano South-West, Ahafo Ano North, and Nsawam Adoagyiri, supporters of various political parties congregated at the collation centers, thereby disrupting the electoral process. Consequently, no winners have been declared for these constituencies, and efforts are currently underway to finalize the results.

In contrast, in all three constituencies within the Greater Accra Region, candidates from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were announced as the winners. Specifically, in Okaikwei Central, NDC candidate Baba Sadiq emerged victorious against the incumbent Member of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Patrick Boamah. Similarly, in Ablekuma North, NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn triumphed over NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh, and in Tema Central, Ebi Bright of the NDC was declared the winner.
