Two demographic experts have encouraged Ghana to reduce its population growth in order to ensure long-term social and economic success.
According to the NPC, Ghana’s annual population growth of 700,000 people presents a huge challenge to the country’s development, the quality of life for its citizens, and national initiatives like the Ghana Beyond Aid initiative.
At a news conference on Thursday in Accra to kick off a weeklong celebration of this year’s World Population Day, experts spoke, including Dr. Leticia Appiah, Executive Director of the National Population Council (July 7, 2022).
The United Nations Governing Council observes World Population Day (WPD) on July 11 each year to bring attention to the crucial role that population issues play in regional, societal, and personal development.
For national attention and action, the anniversary calls for a critical evaluation of the relevant population and its related issues that either promote or obstruct rapid socio-economic growth.
For this year’s commemoration, the global theme is “A world of 8 billion: towards a robust future for everyone, harnessing possibilities and guaranteeing rights and choices,” while the national theme is “Prioritizing rights and choices; harnessing opportunities, the route to a resilient future for all.”
