IF GHANAIANS COULD PAY THEIR RENT MONTHLY OR EVEN EVERY 6 MONTHS, THERE WILL BE SO MUCH FINANCIAL FREEDOM ” – John Dumelo
Actor and Politician, John Setor Dumelo has stated that the route to financial independence for many Ghanaians is obstructed due to our ‘cruel’ rental system, which requires two years of advance payment before obtaining a property.
Dumelo, the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon in the Greater Accra Region, asserts that implementing monthly rent payments or, at most, six months in advance will liberate numerous Ghanaians from the burden of debt.
According to Ghana’s laws, it is against the law to ask for over six months’ rent from an individual before leasing your property; however, as is often the case in Ghana, this regulation is typically viewed as a recommendation rather than strictly adhered to.
The norm is a payment of two years, though occasionally, it’s for one year.
Numerous politicians have voiced their opposition to the practice, but none has taken steps to address it.
