A FRAUDSTER CALLED ME AND I TOLD HIM I’M THE CEO OF MTN AND HE HANGED UP” — MTN Ghana Boss Stephen Blewett

Stephen Blewett, who leads MTN Ghana, shared a personal story about being targeted by mobile money fraud. This was to highlight that scams are becoming more frequent in the country.

On his first anniversary at MTN, Blewett recounted a time when a scammer tried to deceive him. The scammer attempted to make him believe that he had accidentally transferred money without his consent.

“In my first month here, I received a call from a fraudster. He claimed I had made a transfer and tried to manipulate me into believing it,” Blewett shared.

Blewett was committed to not falling for the scam. He also wanted to stop the scammer from tricking other people. To do this, he kept the scammer talking on the phone for about 15 minutes.

As the conversation continued, Blewett took an unexpected turn. “Eventually, I told him I was the CEO of MTN, and he didn’t believe me. He got upset and hung up. But this experience serves as a reminder of how important it is to stay vigilant,” he said.

This situation revealed the rising issue of fraud in the booming mobile money sector in Ghana.

Blewett openly shared his experience, highlighting the need for people to be vigilant with their financial transactions because scams are becoming increasingly advanced.

In his anniversary speech, Blewett stressed MTN Ghana’s strong dedication to fighting fraud and enhancing the quality of customer service.

“We are constantly asking ourselves how we can improve. We are applying the same customer-first mentality to tackle these issues and are exploring better solutions for our users,” he said.
