DR HANNA BISIW ALLEGES $10,000 BRIBE ATTEMPT BY FORMER PRESIDENT KUFUOR’S NEPHEW OVER CONTROVERSIAL RENT DEAL

Dr Hanna Louisa Bisiw, Acting Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), has made shocking revelations about alleged financial impropriety and a $10,000 bribery attempt involving a relative of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Speaking during an interview on Metro TV, Dr Bisiw recounted how Kwabena Kufuor, whom she identified as President Kufuor’s nephew, attempted to offer her a bribe to dissuade her from probing a questionable lease deal tied to the Fund’s office premises.

The lease, according to Dr Bisiw, saw the MDF paying over US$1.4 million in rent for a facility she described as a “cubicle,” with monthly payments of US$10,000. She claimed the same property was leased again for another 12 years, now costing US$9,600 per month—still significantly above market value in the area.

“This is a fund that actually paid $1.4 million for rent… It’s a cubicle. Directors have their files on the floor,” she said. “The one who rented it is called Kwabena Kufuor. He told me himself that he’s President Kufuor’s nephew. When they came begging me, I even thought the place belonged to us.”

According to Dr Bisiw, prevailing rent rates for better facilities in the same area stood at approximately US$6,500, indicating the MDF was overcharged.

Her audit into the lease arrangement revealed that the 12-year advance payment was made in cedi equivalent based on a dollar-denominated invoice. “So, if they quoted $1 million, you would pay whatever the cedi equivalent is that day. This is a government bungalow—they could’ve bought land or even redeveloped state property for less,” she lamented.

Things took a dramatic turn when she claimed Kwabena Kufuor approached her with a financial “gesture.”

“When I told them I wouldn’t use the place and I was going to pursue legal means to reclaim the 12 years’ rent, he came to my office and put money on my table. I asked what the money was for, and he said it was a ‘commission.’ I took the money and reported it,” Dr Bisiw stated firmly.

She further alleged that the said individual tried to convince her by offering insider knowledge of how staff allegedly operated on commission-based incentives within the lease framework.

Dr Bisiw, who is also the National Women’s Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said she was committed to using every legal channel available to retrieve the funds and end what she described as systemic financial mismanagement at the MDF.
