MONEY SENT BACK HOME IN AFRICA IS UNDER ATTACK – Gabby Otchere Fires Shots At Trump’s US Remittance Tax

A prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has criticised the administration led by Donald Trump for suggesting a 5% tax on remittances sent by foreign nationals residing in the US.

Gabby Otchere Darko states that Donald Trump halted USAID and is currently targeting funds sent back to families in Africa.

In an X post, Gabby Otchere-Darko, “America now to tax Diaspora transfers? First it was USAID and now what you send to your families back in Africa is also under attack”.

He further added, “Now is the time to look at how we can mobilise and aggregate Diaspora funds (and contributions from Africa’s growing middle class) to fund the kinds of infrastructural projects that will accelerate development, integration and prosperity of Africans in Africa”.
The US remittance tax, if enacted, would impose a 5% fee on funds transferred from the U.S. to people overseas.

A decision that would predominantly impact immigrants, such as Ghanaians residing in the U.S.

Nonetheless, the legislation provides exemptions for the majority of remittance transfers conducted by U.S. citizens.

In 2023, remittance transfers from the U.S. to global destinations totaled $93 billion, as per World Bank statistics, with Ghana receiving more than $4.6 billion in remittances that year.
