THEY’VE THREATENED TO IMPEACH ME; I’M HAPPY TO HAVE YOU BACK – Mahama Tells Prof Opoku-Agyemang

President John Mahama has voiced his relief at the comeback of Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, calling her return both comforting and politically meaningful.

He stated that the Vice President’s absence created a considerable void in the administration, acknowledging that even a short official visit to neighbouring Togo triggered impeachment threats.

President Mahama stated this on Thursday, May 22, in his greeting to the Vice President upon returning to Ghana after a prolonged medical leave overseas.

This marks his initial formal response to the opposition NPP’s critiques concerning the void created when the President, Vice President, and Speaker of Parliament were abroad without appointing a Chief Justice to serve as acting President, as required by the Constitution.

“I particularly have missed you, because even travelling out of the country has been difficult; they’ve threatened to impeach me for going to Togo while you were away.

“So I’m the most excited to have you back, so you’re warmly welcome,” he said, referencing the Minority’s consideration of impeachment proceedings over alleged constitutional breaches during his trip.

The Vice President, who departed the nation in early April for additional treatment following an unexpected illness, came back to a heartfelt welcome led by President Mahama and his spouse, Lordina.

In attendance at the airport were Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, along with various other high-ranking government officials.

President Mahama lauded Prof Opoku-Agyemang for her commitment to her responsibilities before her medical leave, emphasizing that her foundational work was crucial for continuing the government’s 120-day social contract initiative while she was away.

“Since you left your colleagues, we’ve all missed you. We held the 120-day social contract programme, and everybody said you should have been there, but with all the work you did before you went, we continued, and I think that we were able to present to the people of Ghana a significant percentage of the things that we had promised. But in all this, you were missed.

“Ghana is safe, things seem to be on the right track, and you’ve come at the right time to come and continue the work that you so beautifully started, and your colleagues are very happy to have you back,” he said.
