DR MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA WINS NPP PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARIES, ELECTED FLAGBEARER FOR 2028 ELECTIONS
Former Vice President secures decisive victory with 56.48% of votes nationwide

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, has officially been elected as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general elections, following a decisive victory in the party’s presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
According to official results released by the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Bawumia secured 110,645 votes, representing 56.48% of the total valid ballots cast across more than 300 polling centres nationwide.
His closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, obtained 46,554 votes (23.76%), while Dr Bryan Acheampong, Minister for Food and Agriculture, followed with 36,303 votes (18.53%).
Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum received 1,999 votes (1.02%), and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong polled 402 votes (0.21%).
In all, more than 211,000 delegates participated in the internal election across 276 constituencies, marking one of the most competitive and closely monitored primaries in the NPP’s recent history.
The election outcome reaffirms Dr Bawumia’s commanding influence within the party and positions him to lead the NPP into the 2028 national polls, as he seeks to return the party to power after its 2024 electoral defeat.
Earlier in the evening, both Kennedy Agyapong and Dr Bryan Acheampong publicly conceded defeat, congratulating Dr Bawumia and calling on party members to unite ahead of the next general elections.
Party officials and observers, including representatives of the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and civil society groups, described the exercise as largely peaceful and transparent.
Dr Bawumia’s victory marks the continuation of his long-standing political journey within the NPP, where he has served as running mate in four elections and as flagbearer in the 2024 general elections.
He is expected to deliver his official acceptance speech later tonight at the party’s national headquarters in Accra.
