A/R: DOCTORS PERFORM FIRST-EVER KIDNEY TRANSPLANT, BRINGING HOPE TO PATIENTS

Kidney experts and surgeons in the Ashanti Region have successfully conducted the region’s inaugural kidney transplant, representing a major medical advancement and providing fresh hope to those fighting kidney disease.

The groundbreaking operation carried out through a partnership between the Kidney Specialist Center and HopeXchange Medical Centre in Kumasi, saved the life of a man in his forties who had battled kidney disease for five years.

After receiving dialysis for nearly a year, the patient chose to proceed with a kidney transplant after discussions with medical professionals at the center.

Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, a nephrology consultant and the primary specialist for the operation, characterized the accomplishment as a significant advancement.

He revealed that the expense of the initial transplant was around $25,000, while upcoming procedures are anticipated to fall between $30,000 and $35,000.

Motivating kidney patients to stay optimistic, Dr. Tannor reassured them of his team’s dedication to conducting additional transplants to enhance lives.

This is something we are hoping will continue, and it has come to stay here in Kumasi,” he stated.

This achievement signifies an important progress in kidney care in Ghana, minimizing dependence on dialysis and enhancing access to life-saving therapies.
