IMANI Africa’s president, Franklin Cudjoe, is admonishing President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to ditch an honorary award earmarked for him by the management of the University of Allied and Health Sciences (UHAS), Ho.
This comes after a refusal of the suggested prize for the President by a certain youth group in the area.
After the award was announced, some young people from the Volta Region requested the University’s administration to revoke the choice due to the President’s disregard for the region and his overall bad performance leading to severe economic difficulties for the nation.
The youth believe that President Akufo-Addo has not made any contributions to the institution’s success since it was founded by the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
Franklin Cudjoe responded to the situation by stating in a post on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, that despite President Akufo-Addo accepting the honour, it will not address any of the many issues facing Ghana.
“…what at all in Cathedral’s name does Nana Addo want an Honorary doctorate for? A coronation? Will this Award complete the dangerous roads in the Volta Region? Will it solve SALL debacle? Will it reduce inflation and the exchange rate? Will it tear down the highest tax wall erected by any government in a generation?
“Will it end the forgotten galamsey battle? Nearly 2 million youth are idling about mired in poverty and squalor. They need proper domestic industry to at least keep them alive on minimum wage,” he asked in a post on Facebook.
According to Franklin Cudjoe, the President should prioritise devising solutions to solving the teeming unemployment in the country by providing jobs rather than accepting honorary degrees.
“What about resuscitating a Jute making industry so we use local materials to make sacks to bag our cocoa instead of spending nearly $60m a year importing cocoa bagging sacks? These idling youth would have had jobs just going around helping collect basic data for proper property valuation and realistic property taxes! Haba!!
“Mr. President, don’t go for the Honorary Award from the University of Health and Allied Sciences!” he concluded.
