AHMED SUALE MURDER: SUSPECT REMANDED IN CUSTODY

The Managing Director of ISPY Company, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, has been remanded in custody by the Madina Magistrates’ Court as a suspect in the murder of undercover journalist Ahmed Suale.

A man, Mr. Koranteng, also known as Akwase Amakye, faces a provisional charge of murder connected to a long-unsolved assassination, raising significant concerns about journalists’ safety in Ghana.

He is the first person arrested in the case of Ahmed Hussein-Suale’s death and might help find those responsible for this brutal killing.

On January 16, 2019, Ahmed Hussein-Suale was shot and killed by armed men near his home in Madina. He was part of the Tiger Eye PI group and worked with the BBC on a report that revealed corruption in African football, possibly making him a target. His murder drew a lot of international attention, highlighting the dangers investigative journalists face in Ghana.

The FBI, working with local police, conducted a detailed investigation leading to Mr. Koranteng’s arrest. They discovered crucial evidence, such as phone records, which showed contact between Koranteng and Suale before the murder.

Police indicated that Koranteng was near Suale’s home on the night of the murder.

Koranteng admitted to taking photos of Suale but denied selling these images to Kennedy Agyapong, a famous Ghanaian politician. Agyapong had shown the photos on TV, urging his followers to attack Suale if they saw him.

Suale’s lawyer identified Koranteng as the person who sold the photos to Agyapong, who is a former Member of Parliament.

Koranteng’s lawyer, Kofi Essel, described the murder charge as baseless and argued that there was insufficient evidence. He requested bail for Mr. Koranteng.

The judge, Suzzy Nyakotey, postponed the case to April 1 to allow more investigation. The court debated whether selling photos could be enough reason to charge someone with murder.

Authorities hope that the arrest of Mr. Koranteng will lead to further breakthroughs and justice for Ahmed Suale.
