Accra, Ghana – Akua Donkor, the outspoken leader of Ghana’s Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and a notable figure in the country’s political landscape, has reportedly passed away. Her running mate, Roman Fada, confirmed the news during a conversation on Daybreak Hitz with host Andy Dosty. According to Fada, Akua Donkor fell ill over the weekend and was eventually rushed to the Ridge Hospital, where she passed away on Monday night.
Roman Fada recounted his last interactions with Akua Donkor, noting that they had a lengthy phone conversation on Saturday morning. Later that day, he received a call from her driver, who informed him that she was not feeling well and was taken to a government hospital. She reportedly returned home in stable condition, but her health took a drastic turn in the early hours of Monday.
“Around 1 a.m. on Monday, I received a call informing me that she was being rushed to Ridge Hospital,” Roman Fada recalled. “They kept updating me, and by 4 a.m., she was finally admitted. I visited her in the afternoon, and we stayed in touch until I received the devastating call at 10 p.m. last night, confirming her passing.”
Akua Donkor’s death marks the end of a political career characterized by her unconventional approach and relentless advocacy for farmers’ rights and rural development. A former cocoa farmer herself, Akua Donkor rose to prominence as a fearless voice for rural communities. Known for her grassroots approach, she founded the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) intending to represent the interests of farmers and rural Ghanaians, a demographic she believed was underrepresented in the country’s political arena.
Her straightforward manner and unique approach to politics often made her a headline fixture. Despite limited success in national elections, Akua Donkor remained steadfast in her ambitions, running for president multiple times and becoming a household name in Ghanaian politics. Her supporters admired her determination and courage in a field dominated by more traditionally educated and politically polished figures.
During the Daybreak Hitz interview, Roman Fada shared that, upon learning of her passing, he met with party officials and family members, including GFP General Secretary Uncle George, on Monday night to discuss arrangements. While the party has yet to issue a formal statement, Fada emphasized the void her passing leaves in the GFP and Ghanaian politics.
Akua Donkor’s legacy will likely be remembered as that of a trailblazer who challenged norms and tirelessly advocated for the ordinary Ghanaian. Her passing leaves a void in grassroots political representation, and tributes are expected to pour in from supporters and political figures alike in the coming days.
