EC BOSS, JEAN MENSA PROPOSES ‘SIMPLIFIED’ E-VOTING SYSTEM TO REDUCE REJECTED BALLOTS

Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has suggested the implementation of a “simplified” e-voting system to address the ongoing problem of invalid or rejected ballots in African elections.

During her speech at the Ninth Annual Continental Forum for Electoral Management Bodies in Accra on Wednesday, March 12, Jean Mensa voiced worries about the rising number of rejected ballots, cautioning that these patterns might affect election results.

She encouraged electoral management agencies to examine the intricate factors contributing to invalid votes and create efficient solutions.

She clarified that employing a direct recording device, allowing voters to choose their preferred candidate or party logo on a screen, would replace the conventional thumb-printing method that frequently results in mistakes.

“In the ever-evolving era of technology, it is about time that we as a continent begin to consider more effective and efficient mechanisms for voters to cast their ballots,” she stated.

Her suggestion comes in response to worries about the significant waste of ballot papers in Ghana’s general elections.
