ASHAWO LADIES HAVE TAKEN OVER TAMALE – Mayor laments

Sule Salifu, the mayor of Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, is concerned about the city’s growing prostitution problem.

He asserts that regardless of their actual attempts, the government has been unable to stop it, and that it has become popular with both domestic and foreign tourists.

From the Bank of Ghana to the Tamale Post Office Road, through Jubilee Park (which is immediately close to the regional police headquarters), to Nagasaki, and lastly to Triumph Cinema, sex workers throng the main streets all night without fear.

City prostitutes have hired young men to keep an eye on them and report on anything that might jeopardize their nighttime business.

During a 2022 International Youth Week event at Tamasco focused toward young people, Salifu expressed his concerns.

In order to spread the word while the Assembly passes new legislation to toughen up on the issue, the mayor mphasised that he cannot fight prostitutes and other criminal activities alone.

He also advised landlords and women to thoroughly investigate potential tenants before allowing them to occupy rental properties.

“You are just in your house, then someone comes to tell you he or she is looking for a room, you are not interested in finding out the background of that person, what is the person coming to do?

“The person stays in the room whilst everybody is at work, she is inside the room then, men or women going in and coming out. You are seeing and you are not talking, what will the chief in that area do? Because he is not aware,” he stated.
